Castelfranco di Sopra is in the province of Arezzo at about 300 meters above the sea level. It is a town which dates back to the 13th century. The
historic centre is very well preserved with still part of the dfensive medieval walls, towers and medieval gates.
The Torre di Arnolfo or Arnolfo Tower is the emblem of the town and going up on it, you will be able to see the historic bell and the great landscape around it. The two medieval gates are `Porta Campana` and `Porta al Pino`. Entering into town from Porta Campana you will reach the main square with the Town Palace, which dates back to the 1300 with coats of arms and a painting of the 1700 by San Filippo Neri.
Among the churches we suggest to visit the Chiesa di San Filippo Neri from 1600 in the historic centre and the Badia di San Salvatore a Soffenna at the outskirts of the town. Beside the Church, there is also a cloister and a convent. The Church was already known before the year 1000 and inside there are frescoes from the 15th century, among which you can see some works of art by Bicci di Lorenzo and a `Annunciazione` by Giovanni di Ser Giovanni called `Lo scheggia`, Masaccio`s brother.
Castelfranco di Sopra is a territory famous for its `balze`, typical cliffs of this area created by erosion. They are particularly scenic.
We would like to mention some of the events in Castelfranco di Sopra to which you can participate if you decide to spend your vacations here. In May there is the `Festa della grandine` with a procession on the streets whose tradition started in 1700. In August the `Festa del Perdono` (Forgiveness Festival) is full of cultural and sporting events with an amusement park for children and fireworks. Don`t miss the Presepe Vivente (Live Nativity Scene) with more than 100 personages and one of the newborn babies in town as the baby Jesus. Held on December 25 every two years.
Among the typical products in Castelfranco di Sopra we mention the olive oil, the wine Chianti Doc dei Colli Aretini, the porcini mushrooms from Pratomagno and honey. Among the typical dishes you can taste the pappa al pomodoro (bread and tomato sauce soup), the spicy chicken from Valdarno, the bread called schiacciata con l`uva.
