The first coats of arms began to be used in the fourteenth century. The oldest coats of arms were very simple with few colors and a few symbols. The enamels used were usually two: the first could be gold , silver or metal and the second blue, red or black. Classic examples of these early coats of arms are those of the Conti Guidi, Capponi, the Azzi and Amidei. Then they were enriched following the town heraldry and symbols of the territorial authorities and factions. The families close to the Ghibellines, and then the empire, for example, enriched their badges with the image of the eagle.
