Pistoia is located between Florence and Prato on the road that led, today as in past centuries, the Florentines towards the sea, Lucca and Pisa. The city has very ancient origins, it was probably founded by the Etruscans and today it offers visitors a beautiful medieval old town. Its countryside is full of small towns to visit and wonderful historical villas.
Among the historical villas of Pistoia, one of the oldest is Villa La Magia in the village of Quarrata. The villa dates back to the fourteenth century. It was a fortress on the slopes of Monte Albano. In 1583 it was bought by the Medici family because of its proximity to the park of the close Villa Poggio a Caiano. The two properties together would, in fact, become one of the largest game reserves of the Medici. Not far from Villa La Magia there is Villa Di Celle which belonged to the Fabroni family. The building dates back to the seventeenth century and it has stone stairs and a fountain in the center of the square. The garden was designed in the nineteenth century and it is particularly rich in statues, grottos, a waterfall, a temple and a pagoda-shaped aviary.
To those who enjoy the sights and wonders of small Tuscan villages built on the mountains, we suggest to visit the Villa Garzoni in Collodi. The giant house with its garden is located on the crest of a hill and appears to block with its building the 'descent' of the many small houses of the village.
