Villa Rospigliosi or Villa di Spicchio in Pistoia
Villa Rospigliosi is located in Lamporecchio in the province of Pistoia in the town of clove. For this reason, for many it is known by the name of Villa di Spicchio (clove). The villa belonged to the family Rospigliosi and there is the family coat of arms on the facade: divided into four parts alternating gold and blue with blue diamond pattern on a gold background and gold on blue background.
Villa Rospigliosi or Villa di Spicchio was built in the seventeenth century by Giulio Rospigliosi. As Giulio was originally from Pistoia and was elected pope, Pope Clement IX. Work began in 1667 and the architect probably belonged to the school of the famous architect Gian Lorenzo Bernini. It is uncertain whether Bernini himself participated in the design of the house or if it was one of his students, the Roman Mattia de Rossi, to project and build the villa. The villa has very large dimensions compared to the surrounding garden and the proximity to the chapel, built after 1675. Pope Clement IX could not see the house completed, as he died the same year of construction.
The villa has a central body with four floors and two lateral lower parts with three floors, and slightly protruding from the main building. Long strips of stone adorn the facade both horizontally and vertically. Giuseppe Zocchi built a balustrade with decorative statues but this was later destroyed. The main door of entrance to the villa has stone stairs. The rooms are majestic and worth a visit. In particular, the Elliptical Salon which is located on the main floor and is painted with allegorical figures of the zodiac.
In the park there is the chapel, also this is elliptical. The chapel is dedicated to St. Simon and Jude. A large round fountain is located near the chapel. At the center of the fountain there is a statue of a newt. The park is characterized by a long avenue of oaks and is about 29 acres surrounded by stone walls. There are many olive trees and woods.
