Villa La Barbolana will surprise you with its architectural form and its history. The Villa Barbolana is located in Anghiari in the province of Arezzo in a predominant position on the surrounding area.
Villa La Barbolana is a fortified villa with a central tower higher than the house itself, while being an integral and harmonic structure. The origins are very old. Already in the year one thousand the family Barbolani Montauto ruled the land, called Montauto fief. In the sixteenth century the owners, descendants of the first Barbolani, decided to build a villa where to spend their time and live. The fort is in the style of this century and the villa pleased the client and the project, Mr. Federico Antonio Barbolani. His work began in 1556 and ended in 1582.
The villa has four bastions at the corners that are slightly jutting out from the side walls and the center has a square tower higher and covered with a roof of red bricks. The floor of the villa is tiled. There are many windows, even though some of these are fake or have subsequently been closed. In the villa there are many portals in the Renaissance style, and most of the rooms have vaulted ceilings. Inside the main building there was also a private chapel. Near the driveway there is a stone well. The villa has been recently restored to celebrate the marriage of Carlotte Barbolani with the Duke of San Clemente, Simone Francesco Velluti Zati.
Part of the garden is planted with grass and there are several hedges that surround the property. A long avenue of cypresses combines the fortified villa in a convent, the Cappuccini Convent. Villa Barbolana is surrounded by farmland and has always played the role of main building of the farm, besides being certainly a prestigious residence.
