Villa Passerini in the province of Arezzo
In the enchanting scenery landscape of Cortona there is the magnificent Villa Passerini, an aristocratic residence of the seventeenth century.
Cortona is a small town but it attracts more and more tourists every year. It could be the next location to spend your holidays in Tuscany. Between hills and a few kilometers from the historical center of the village of Cortona, Villa Passerini. The villa was built between the sixteenth and the seventeenth century and then underwent significant architectural and structural changes in the nineteenth century. The name comes from the Passerini family, a prominent family in the area that for centuries has owned the property. Even today Passerini are the owners of this beautiful residence. At the end of the fifteenth century Cardinal Silvio Passerini, born in Cortona, became Bishop of Cortona, and a great friend of Giulio de' Medici, who in 1522 became Pope Clement VII.
Villa Passerini has three floors and is surrounded by a large garden. In the garden there is a small chapel and a small neoclassical temple with winter citrus trees. Part of the park is dedicated to the Italian garden with hedges and geometric paths. Another part is devoted to the lemon garden. And the areas further away from the main villa have been transformed into terraces to cultivate plants and fruits. Therefore part of the park is an agricultural zone, as many other villas and farms in the area.
Among the works that adorn the park we remind the fountain in front of the main entrance. It was probably built in the eighteenth century. In this large water tank there is a small island and a small decorative bridge, in addition to beautiful stone arches. A large stone wall covers and conceals another garden, so called secret garden. In the secret garden you can admire frescoes and beautiful examples of camellias.
