Villa Oliveto in the province of Arezzo
Valdichiana is certainly one of the most beautiful areas of Tuscany with great food and beautiful landscapes. During your holidays in Tuscany discover the area and maybe visit Villa Oliveto, a historic villa now a museum.
Villa Oliveto is not far from the town of Oliveto. The villa is located in Valdichiana in the province of Arezzo. From a distance you can recognize the beautiful facade rather remarkable given the size of the residence. On the property there was probably a farmhouse surrounded by fields and gardens. In the nineteenth century it was restored and modified, probably enlarged. The villa is divided into several levels and to each of them was given a social function. The lower floors were in fact the parts dedicated to the works typical of the countryside and the farm: the oil mill and wine cellars. At a higher level there were the servants and workers. On the top floor, on the other hand, lived the noble family.
The facade is full of windows and there are various openings to the outside. The park is quite large and was modernized in the nineteenth century in Romantic style. The villa is located on a hill and the terrain has steep slopes. For this reason, the wise farmers decided to build terraces to plant olive trees. In addition to the numerous olive trees, there are significant examples of oaks and cedars. Some of these plants are several centuries old.
The villa and the whole estate belonged to the Barbolani family. The Barbolani were important nobles who controlled the entire feud since the Middle Ages. The feud was known by the name of the Feud of Montauto. The family Barbolani possessed, and still possesses toda , another villa in Arezzo: Villa La Barbolana . In 1927, however, the Barbolani decided to sell Villa Oliveto to the family Mazzi. The family Mazzi kept the villa for several years, but in 1980 they sold the villa and property to the City of Civitella in Val di Chiana.
The villa is open every day . Inside there is a documentation center on concentration camps and on this sad page in the history of Europe. The villa was in fact for a short period a concentration camp for Jews.
