Borgo San Lorenzo is the
largest town in the Mugello, famous for its ceramics and Chini, one of the greatest exponents of
Art Nouveau in Italy. The village has Roman origins and at that time was called Anneianum. The name was changed after the fall of the Roman Empire, when the town was formed near the
Parish of San Lorenzo, taking this name. In the Middle Ages the city was conquered by Florence and remained the domain of Florence for many centuries. The defensive walls were built in the fourteenth century and two of the four doors are still visible. In 1527, the city managed to resist the attack of the French troops. The Lorena embellished the city and reclaimed the territory. In the twentieth century, Galileo Chini and his art made the town famous in the world.
The town of Borgo San Lorenzo and its countryside offers numerous restaurants where you can taste typical local dishes and a variety of shops specializing in local produce. To taste there are certainly the tortelli of the Mugello ( a type of ravioli) and among the typical products of Borgo San Lorenzo we mention the prestigious white truffle of Mugello which can be the basic ingredient of many recipes. Also in Borgo San Lorenzo, in any historic local bakery, you can taste a cake that was among the favorites of Lorenzo de' Medici, the 'Torta in Balconata' with dates, almonds, cloves, walnuts and raisins.
