Declared World Heritage Site protected by the UNESCO in 1995, the historic center of Siena will leave you speechless. Of Etruscan origins, the city is built on three hills and the main road, Via Banchi di Sopra, intersects with Via Banchi di Sotto dividing the city in three thirds: Terzo di Camollia, Terzo di San Martino and Terzo di Città. According to legend, however, the city was founded by Senio and Ascanio, sons of Remus, who fled to escape from Romulus on two horses and came to Siena. The colors of the two horses, black and white are the colors of the city today. Numerous battles between Siena and Florence in the Middle Ages, but the most important are the Battle of Montaperti in 1260 during which Siena won and  the Battle of Colle Val d'Elsa in 1269 when Florence won and gave to Siena a new government: the Government of the Nine. When you walk in Piazza del Campo count the segments in which this beautiful square is divided and you will see that they are precisely nine: the piazza in fact dates back to 1270 and was built by the new government. Siena during the Middle Ages was an important stop along the Via Francigena and the numerous pilgrims stopped to rest in town. For this reason the medieval hospital Santa Maria della Scala, now a museum, located in front of the stunning Duomo of Siena, was so important.
