The beautiful town of Montalcino stands on a hill and its origins are Etruscan and Roman. In 814 the city was given by the emperor to the
Abbey of St. Antimo and in the following centuries the economy of the village developed based on the manufacture of leather, wool, iron and ceramics. Montalcino was conquered by Siena and the Sienese built a circle of
defensive walls around the town and stopped the subsequent attempts to autonomy from the inhabitants of Montalcino. In 1256 Montalcino allied with Florence, and became independent, but only until 1260, when Siena conquered it again in 1361 and built the beautiful fortress that characterizes it. After the siege of Florence in 1553, the town passed under the rule of the Florentines until the unification of Italy in 1861.
