Of Etruscan origin, the city of Pistoia became an
important Roman town and it was fortified in the second century BC In the fifth century the city was partly destroyed by the invasions of the Goths, but still obtained to be named bishop's seat due to its importance in the territory. In the ninth century the city grew a lot through the German empire and the city's economic growth continued also when in the twelfth century it became a free municipality. In the thirteenth century began important struggles between Pistoia against Lucca and Florence, and Pistoia at the end was defeated. Florence actively ruled the city with its men of trust. Thanks to the
Medici and the
Lorena, the city began to grow again and to build important buildings and roads. In the nineteenth century it was also built the railway.
