Cortona is a beautiful city with a medieval architecture nestled in the hills of the province of Arezzo. The walls of Etruscan origins are still visible today in the historic center of the city. In Roman times the city was of great importance due to its proximity to the Via Cassia. After the continuing fighting with Arezzo, Cortona passed in 1411 under the rule of Florence. The Medici reorganized the city and built the Girifalco Fortress. The fifteenth century was indeed a period of prosperity for the city, which saw also increasing its artistic heritage with the works of the great artist Piero della Francesca.
