Villa Corridi in the province of Livorno

The park of Villa Corridi is the largest park in Livorno. In fact, the property has a garden of about 63,000 square meters. Half of the park is now a meadow open to the public and free of charge. The villa was built in the mid-nineteenth century by the family Corridi. The family Corridi worked in the pharmaceutical field and had a distillery, a short distance from the villa. The residence was built at a strategic point of the property. In fact, it had a dominant position on the surrounding farmland. The Corridi decided to build a spa center within their villa. The architect who designed the spa was Angiolo della Valle. Unfortunately the spa was not a successful business.
The villa is very large and its green location made it ideal for a sanatorium in 1904. The park was renovated and converted into a British style park. An area was instead used as Italian park. In the park there are numerous plants, including rare species. The trees especially enrich the garden. These include plants of oaks, elms, dwarf palms, Canary palms, pines from Syria.
The sanatorium was closed in 1970. Within the grounds there is an eclectic and neo-Gothic style church built in the early twentieth century. The Church of Christ the King, this is the name given to it. The Chapel of St. Edward's is of more ancient origins, dating back to 1867. The dome is octagonal and commemorates the place where a Corridi family member, Gustavo Corridi, was assassinated. In the park the Teatro Mascagni, a small theater built in the thirties.
