Villa Gower in Livorno

Villa Gower is known by many names given the many owners and its ancient history. The villa stands on a hill and in the Middle Ages it was an important center of lookout and defense. On the hill there was indeed an imposing fortress called Castle of the Ants or Oreto Castle. The fortress was probably built by the Republic of Pisa in the thirteenth century. Unfortunately, in the nineteenth century the last remains of the castle were destroyed. The entire town is still known by the name of Castellaccio.
In the eighteenth century there was already a villa. Gaetano Pavolini was the owner of the whole area. In the nineteenth century the new owners became the Gower family. It was the family Gower to analyze the spring waters of the hill and discovered that they had beneficial and healing properties. Since 1842 the Gower commercially exploited then the value and benefits of the waters in Castellaccio.
In 1900 the property was purchased by Rosolino Orlando who rebuilt the house and changed part of the green areas. In the thirties on this hill was held a Grand Prix of Italy and the streets were part of the Circuit Montenero. Unfortunately, in the nineties a disastrous fire damaged part of the park even though today it is still very nice and the vegetation is growing back. Today, the villa offers luxury apartments where you can spend your holidays in Tuscany.
