Villa Letizia in Livorno
Villa Letizia is also known under the name of Villa Poniatowsky. The villa is located in the city of Livorno, in the district Ardenza known for the racecourse.
Villa Letizia or Villa Poniatowsky dates back to the nineteenth century. The villa is on three floors and has a rectangular shape with two lower buildings on either side of the main structure. In the upper part there is a porch built so you can have a panoramic place from which to observe the park and the surrounding landscape. There are many openings and on the northern side there is a semicircular portico. The south side opens onto the park.
The villa was in fact built by Prince Stanislaus Poniatowsky, grandson of the last King of Poland. The villa was built for his sons Joseph and Charles. Although the original building is from the early nineteenth century, the villa was renovated and enlarged in 1873 by the new owner, David Bondi. David Bondi not only changed the structure of the house but also the park that surrounded it. Bondi, in fact, added parts of hedges and woodland in the park and he also built roads. He decided to build a tower octagonal used as a water tank.
The park is still very large and rich in tree species and shrubs, but it has lost the splendor it had in the past. The owners had built the grove of Diana, the pond Adelchi and pergola Bacchus. Today the villa and the park are home to the headquarters of a faculty of the University of Pisa. In the property there is also Federico Caprilli Hippodrome. The big gate and the thick vegetation protect the villa and the park making it even more interesting to discover and visit.
