Villa Henderson in the province of Livorno
Tuscany is rich in historic Renaissance villas. Among these villas many were purchased over the years by the municipalities of individual cities and converted into museums, convention centers, parks and outdoor venues for everyone and important libraries.
Villa Henderson is located in Livorno and is now the home of the Museum of Natural History of the Mediterranean. Well worth a visit, the museum has several exhibition halls and different paths to get to know and understand life. The Hall of Man, the Hall of Geopaleontology, the Hall of Man in the Mediterranean, the Hall of Comparative Anatomy of Vertebrates are the main rooms that are located in the villa. In addition to the main building on the property, there are some smaller buildings that in any case have been set up to accommodate wings of the museum. In a building in the park there is the Hall of Invertebrates while in another building there is the library room and the study and research center. In addition, particularly interesting is the Sea Room, specializing in the species present in the Mediterranean Sea today and in the past.
Villa Henderson takes its name from one of its owners: George Henderson, who purchased it in 1917. Before him there were many owners: the Orlandi, the Filippi, the Guebhard, the James Webb and Bracchini. In 1934, the British George Henderson died and the house passed to the municipality of Livorno. The British community in the nineteenth and twentieth century was one of the most important and influential foreign community of Livorno. In the middle of the twentieth century Villa Henderson had about thirty rooms and a large park.
In the park today there is an area used as a botanical garden with species typical of the Mediterranean area and Livorno. There is also a weather station. Still visible some aspects of how the park of Villa Henderson was in the eighteenth century: the British-style park, the eighteenth-century cave and an ancient pine tree that gives shade to the area of the cave.
