Villa Borbone in Viareggio in Lucca
Villa Borboneis located between Viareggio and Torre del Lago. Part of his park belongs to the Natural Reserve of San Rossore, among the destinations that you may want to visit if you're staying in Lucca and Versilia or love nature.
Villa Borbone was built in 1822 but was modified several times during the nineteenth century. Originally the building was in fact only a hunting lodge. Subsequently, however, the owners decided to transform it into an elegant villa joining three different buildings. The first three buildings were with three floors and they were part of a vast park, designed by the architect Lorenzo Nottolini for the Duchess Maria Luisa di Borbone. When the three buildings were joined together, tentatively in the fifties of the nineteenth century, it was decided to leave a large central body with three floors and two wings of only two floors. They were also built several other buildings, including a chapel.
The small chapel of San Carlo Borromeo was built in 1849 at the request of Charles III of Borbone and is known as the Chapel of the Sepulchre. In the nineteenth century mass was celebrated by the monks of the Franciscan order and the Borbone family could attend mass reaching the church via a private walkway. Charles III of Parma and Carlo Ludovico from Lucca are buried in this church that in the late nineteenth century was adorned with marble works by Giuseppe Pardini.
In the late nineteenth century the villa was home to Mary Margaret and Charles of Bourbon with their court, and subsequently his daughter Bianca, wife of Leopold Salvatore of Habsburg-Lorraine. During the war it was occupied by soldiers and now belongs to the town of Viareggio, which organizes events and exhibitions.
