Villa Grabau in Lucca
Villa Grabau is a prestigious luxury villa in Lucca. The villa is located in San Pancrazio and is one of the most important historic houses in the Renaissance style in Lucca.
Villa Grabau was built in the sixteenth century and preserves the Renaissance style even though in 1800 more changes were made to the architecture of the villa and garden by the owners. The villa has three floors and has a linear shape with a square. The many windows are framed by sandstone and at the back there are stone arches that create a very impressive portico. The porch was closed in the nineteenth century, with frescoes and decorated following the trends of the moment, in trompe l'oeil and Neoclassical style. The main facade looks towards the valley, while the other side of the house looks towards the hills. The location is so ideal, between the plains and the hilly landscape.
Many were the owners of the villa. In the seventeenth century belonged to Diodati. Later it belonged to the Orsucci family and the Gualanducci family. Carlo Ludovicovon Schwartze and his wife Carolina Grabau were the owners in the nineteenth century and since then the family von Grabau owns the property.
The park is majestic. A long avenue of tall hedges of geometric holm perfectly accompanies the visitor who enters the property up to the front garden of the villa. A terrace divides the park into two levels. The wall of the terrace is in white and black ceramic. Two fountains adorn the walls and are decorated with bronze masks. In the Italian garden, there are more than one hundred century-old citrus trees in old terracotta pots with coats of arms. The groves dates back to the nineteenth century while changes are the oldest outdoor theater and fountain grotesque probably the school of Pietro Tacca.
The villa and the park can be visited every day in summer and Sundays only from November to Easter.
