Villa Burlamacchi Rossi in Lucca
Are you on vacation in one of our villas in Lucca? Take the opportunity to visit the beautiful Villa Burlamacchi Rossi.
Villa Burlamacchi Rossi is in Gattaiole in the province of Lucca. The villa has the XVI century and was built following a design by the architect Nicolao Civitali. Civitali is famous for having built the Palazzo del Podesta in St. Michael's Square in the center of Lucca. In Piazza San Michele there is also a statue of Franaceso Burlamacchi. It was Francesco Burlamacchi who buily the house, he owned it up to his arrest and his death. He was imprisoned for having organized a revolt against the Medici family in Lucca and the power that they had on all of Tuscany. In addition, he wanted to bring the Protestant Reformation in Tuscany. The attempt failed because he was betrayed by some of his own comrades.
After the verdict and the beheading of Francesco Burlamacchi, the villa passed to the Santini family that worked for over a century in the embellishment and the pictorial decoration of Villa Burlamacchi. Among the leading painters Francesco Antonio Cecchi and Bartolomeo De Santi. Francesco Antonio Cecchi in 1720 frescoed halls on the first floor and facade with seven arcades. Bartolomeo De Santi painted the living room on the ground floor with symbols and mythological figures.
In addition to Santini, to Montieri and to Altieri, some of the owners, there is also Emilien de Nieuwerkerke, a Dutch artist friend of Napoleon III. Escaped from Paris, he settled in Lucca with the family and when his daughter was married to Prince Altieri he gave her the villa and the park.
In 1940 Villa Burlamacchi was bought by Paolo Rossi, anti-fascist partisan from Genoa. Paolo Rossi was one of 75 politicians who designed the Italian Constitution. Today it belongs to the Rossi family and is open by appointment by calling the owner, the writer Francesca Duranti Rossi.
