Villa Roncioni in Pugnano in Pisa
Are you a lover of books by Henry James? Do you love movies? Come and discover the villa where some scenes from the film 'Portrait of a Lady' were filmed by director Jane Campion. The villa is located in Pugnano in the province of Pisa and is called Villa Roncioni.
Villa Roncioni is located at the foot of Mount Pisano and is surrounded by a large garden. The property with its farms was purchased in 1468 by Guelfo Roncioni. The family in the sixteenth century Roncioni decided to merge the many buildings and homes and to create a wide variety of country residence. However, it was in the eighteenth century that the country house was transformed into a villa. The owner of the villa during the work was Francesco Roncioni. The architect that he was called Giuseppe Gaetano Niccolai. The work lasted about six years between 1773 and 1779. The central building was erected more than the two other sides. A small balcony is located on the first floor above the main door. The coat of arms of the family Roncioni stands out above the doors of the balcony. The family coat of arms is colored blue with a silver horse.
Inside the villa has beautiful decorated rooms. The central living room is decorated with a faux painted porch and stairs that create an opening space even though the room is closed and the visitor's gaze is easily lost in front of the wonder of these pictorial decorations. The fake balustrade frames a painting called Spring. The stairs have painted columns. The frescoes were done by Pasquale Cioffo in 1781.
In the park there is the famous silkworm in neo-Gothic style built in 1831 by Alessandro Gherardesca. The importance of this building is the fact that it is the first example of Italian manufacturing building built in neo-Gothic style with mullioned windows, pinnacles and statues in terracotta. In neo-Gothic style, there is also the small church built in 1846 by the same Alessandro Gherardesca. Suggestive also the cave with nymph, decorations on the ceiling and marble fountains.
