Villa Broggi Caraceni in Florence
Villa Broggi Caraceni is a villa located in Florence, built in the early years of the twentieth century. The importance of the villa is its Art Nouveau style and the architectural and decorative details characterizing the complex, both inside and outside.
Villa Broggi Caraceni was built in 1911. The owner was Enrico Broggi and the architect was John Michelazzi. In 1929 the new owner becomes Dominico Caraceni. Caraceni was a very famous tailor and used the villa as a location for his business. Villa Broggi Caraceni is the only example of Art Nouveau villa in Florence that keeps the Art Nouveau style in both the façade and the interior decorations. The other Art Nouveau villas, in fact, maintain the style mainly just in its architectural exterior. The two owners instead called very important local artists and craftsmen.
Galileo Chini decorates with special paintings the interior rooms, the De Matteis created the colored glass, the Michelucci from Pistoia made the works of iron used for windows, stairs, and the spider on the skylight of the stairs. The ceramics come instead from the Manufacture of San Lorenzo. Nice also the mosaic floors and the stone vases near the entrance gate.
Outside, the villa has a main bilding with an octagonal turret and a loggia. The lodge has ceramic decorations and a wrought iron railing. Particular, the small balcony on the east side. The lines and corners of the house do not seem to follow an order and yet create a perfect balance. Inside, the rooms are built around a central hall with a domed skylight. Here there is a lantern with colored glass and wrought iron decorations in the shape of a spider. The dome was painted by Chini with women dancing.
