The Villa L`Ugolino in Florence
The Villa Ugolino is located in Impruneta near Florence. The villa has belonged to the Ugolini family since 1444. The coat of arms of the Ugolini family is half blue with a gold leopard with blue spots and half gold with a blue lion with gold spots.
The country house originally belonged to Piero di Cristofano di Domenico da Montevarchi and in 1427 was sold to the family Lotti. In 1444 the family sold it to Giorgio di Niccolò Ugolini. The architects who worked on the house were Giovan Battista Caccini and later Gherardo Silvani. In 1691 the owners embellish the rooms inside the residence. Among the improvements of this age there are the frescoes by Atanasio Bimbacci. The main hall was frescoed by Bimbacci with scenes of shepherds and allegories is the living room on the ground floor. On the vault of the hall Bimbacci represented the Rat of Prosperpina and on the right there is the emblem of the Ugolini family.
The villa is located along the Chiantigiana Road and offers a beautiful facade with a portico of the eighteenth century. The porch has three arches and a staircase in the center. The decorations which enrich and give vitality to the porch are several vases and some eagle statues. The porch was added in 1714. Today, however, several windows are walled and therefore the visual effect present in the eighteenth century is now disappeared.
In 1744 Giorgio Ugolini restored the villa. The beautiful chapel dedicated to St. Francis and St. Frances of Rome dates back to the mid-eighteenth century. Although the portal made of faux marble, the visual impact is considerable. In addition, in the chapel there is a shrine with some valuable relics.
