The Medici Villa Il Trebbio
The Medici Villa Il Trebbio is located in San Piero a Sieve and from its position dominates the entire Mugello near Florence. The Medici were from the Mugello and so this castle with its dominant location was loved by the most powerful family in Florence.
In the twelfth century on the hill where now stands the house stood a solitary square tower. In the fourteenth century the tower was transformed into a fortified castle and in the fifteenth century Cosimo the Elder asked to Michelozzo to restore the castle and make it into a country villa. The property consisted of 28 farms. Michelozzo worked for about ten years on the embellishment and enlargement of the villa. He created the central courtyard and the outdoor staircase, the porch and the covered guard walkway. Despite these works, the property continued to look more like a medieval castle than to a real villa. The garden of Villa Il Trebbio, for example, was the typical medieval, closed and not accessible from the outside. The walkways are perpendicular and part of it is decorated with pergolas.
Inside Villa Il Trebbio there are large frescoes and majestic works like in the other villas built in the following centuries. This residence, in fact, was generally used by the family as a hunting lodge or formal and informal parties. The villa was lived especially during the summer, when the historical center of Florence was too hot. Both Villa Il Trebbio and Villa Cafaggiolo were villas that, while not bearing witness to the wealth and culture of the family, represented the power and sovereignty of the Medici. Villa Il Trebbio was in fact the center to control 40 farms and 16 houses in the sixteenth century and 51 farms in the years when Ferdinand I sold the villa to Senator Julian Serragli.
Over the centuries, the Castle Trebbio was run by the Filipini fathers of the Oratory of St Florence, the Codibò and by the Borghese family. Today the villa is privately owned but it is open by appointment.
