Villa di Poggio Torselli in Florence
Villa Poggio Torselli is located in San Casciano Val di Pesa in the province of Florence. The coat of arms of the Orlandini family is located in the villa. The coat of arms is colored blue and red.
Villa Poggio Torselli is located on the hills between Florence and the Chianti region. The house had various owners, including Machiavelli, Antinori, Strozzi and Capponi. Giovan Battista Girolamo Orlandini bought it in 1644 and called an important architect to enlarge the villa. The Florentine architect Lorenzo Merlini was important and well-known among the noble families of Florence. Merlini decided to expand the body of the villa, creating two sides, lower than the main building. The portal is raised and sits on some steps. In the project you can see an influence on the style of the architect Pietro da Cortona.
The interior of the villa is very beautiful and elegant. The frescoes are by Matteo Bonechi and some of his students. The artist chose to paint allegorical figures on the vaults of some of the rooms. Particularly striking and interesting the perspective game that is created with internal stairs between one floor and the another. The garden of Villa Torselli dates back to the eighteenth century and today has more than one hundred century-old trees of lemons and a large display of flowers. Recently, the garden has been restored, enhancing and respecting the historical structure of the past.
The villa belonged to the family Orlandini until 1722. Among the distinguished guests of the villa there are Pope Pius VII in the nineteenth century and Emperor Paul I of Russia.
