The Medici Villa La Topaia
The Villa Medici La Topaia is located in Castello in one of the most loved area by the Medici family. They built here also the Villa Castello and Villa La Petraia .
The villa Topaia was for the Medici family primarily a hunting lodge and a place to stay when they would not slive in the other two villas, which were certainly more popular and fashionable villas. In the sixteenth century the villa was restored by Cosimo I de' Medici. The writers Varchi and Ammirato stayed in this villa and wrote here 'Storie Fiorentine' (Florentine Histories). In honor of the master of the house, Varchi called the villa Villa Cosmiano. The villa was home to other famous people until the large structural changes made by Cosimo III de' Medici. The villa had a large living room, a chapel and a garden, but Cosimo III was fond of floriculture and science and decided to enlarge the garden.
During the reign of the Grand Duke Cosimo III, the garden became a real botanical garden with many rare species of plants. The painter Bimbi, very famous at that time, the Grand Duke asked to depict these plants to life size in one of the lounges. The property passed to the Lorena and then to the Savoia. The villa was owned for a period of time by the Opera Nazionale Combattenti (National Fighter Organization) and then was given to private families like the Serafin.
Today the villa is privately owned and not open to visitors.
