Villa La Pietra in Florence
Villa La Pietra is located in Florence and the coat of arms of the villa is the one of the Capponi family. The coat of arms by Capponi is divided into two parts with silver bottom and black top.
In the fourteenth century the Macinghi possessed the land of the property. In 1460 the new owners are the Sassetti, an influential family in Florence who claimed descent from the Saxon kings. Francis Thomas enlarged the residence and housed important artists and writers of the time as his friend Marsilio Ficino. Today Francis Thomas is buried in the church of Santa Trinita in Florence. In 1481, in fact, he commissioned Ghirlandaio's frescoes in the chapel of the church and in these frescoes are depicted him, his wife and Lorenzo the Magnificent. In 1546 the Sassetti sold the villa to the Capponi.
In the seventeenth century Luigi Capponi decided to live in the villa. Following the Baroque era, he decorated the house and brought a lot of changes. Among the most important changes, the transformation of the elliptical courtyard with stairs in the living room. In 1697 the house passed to the Marquis Alessandro Fontana and he called the architects Ruggeri to modernize the villa again. The walled garden with two large wooden women statues is in baroque style with statues and masks.
In the nineteenth century, when Florence was the capital of the Kingdom of Italy, Villa La Pietra was the site of the Embassy of Prussia. The Italian garden, three main terraces and fountains with a game in perspective date back to the twentieth century and was created by the gardener of Sir Acton, the owner of the villa until the nineties. Prince Charles of England was one of the famous guests of the villa of Sir Acton.
