Villa Il Diluvio in Florence
Villa Il Diluvio is located in Mosciano in the province of Florence. The coat of arms of the villa belongs to the family Ximenes and is red with two silver swords and two columns of gold. On the columns there are two golden lilies.
The cottage belonged to the family Guidetti. The Guidetti were Florentine merchants, but in 1443 sold the villa to Geri. In 1539 the property passed to Mannucci and in 1563 to Primerani. Gardi bought it in 1608, but the property was again sold to other owners: the Cerchi, the Lenzi, the Buccetti. In 1693 the family Ximenes bought the house. In the early eighteenth century the villa was raised of one floor and enlarged it laterally. The two lateral bodies from the eighteenth century were built slightly behind the original central body. The architect was Gioacchino Fortini while the family called the painter Benedetto Fortini for the works within the halls. The coat of arms of the family Ximenes is located on the center window.
Note also a plaque on the first floor that reminds visitors that the Grand Duke Leopold I stayed in this villa repeatedly during his hunting trips.
Benedetto Fortini frescoed rooms, especially the living room on the first floor. The columns and portals are painted and he decorated the doors of the hall. On some portals, Fortini also painted allegorical figures and statues. Between a door and the other there are paintings depicting landscapes with ruins of the ancient Roman Empire.
Outside the park there is a big monumental Nymphaeum. The statue is located near the gate that surrounds the garden and the villa. In the park there is a lemon garden, various oaks and two old magnolias. In addition, there is a small chapel.
