Villa Arceno in Siena
Villa Arceno is located between San Gusmè and Castelnuovo Berardenga in the province of Siena. The villa dates back to the seventeenth century and is surrounded by a large nineteenth century park.
Villa Arceno has about one thousand acres and in the origins the property was probably an Etruscan community. In the Middle Ages, it belonged to the family Berardenghi. The property was later divided into several smaller parcels. In the fifteenth century the family Del Taia decided to buy the various plots of land with their churches and their houses and to reunify the property. Villa Arceno was built in the seventeenth century. Flaminio del Taia was the owner who began the works at the villa. In the nineteenth century the villa and the property passed to the Piccolomini Clementini who embellished the villa and made it even more luxurious and elegant.
The Count Emilio Piccolomini Fantastici devoted great attention to the villa and called Fantastici Agostino, one of the most important architects of villas and gardens to beautify the park surrounding the villa. The Fantastici devised a large park and created an English woodland called Romantic Park today. In addition to the forest, the Fantastici created a pond, a large deck and built several houses. The changes and plans for the park took place between 1833 and 1844, the year in which Augustino Fantastici died.
In 1848 the Count Emilio Piccolomini Fantastici built a tunnel connecting the main road to the estate of Arceno. In the following century there were many changes of ownership, and today there is a large farm, a must visit! In the park you will find redwoods, cedars of Lebanon, long avenues lined with cypress trees and vast vineyards ... a picturesque view to appreciate even more the Chianti region.
