Villa La Vagnola in Siena
Villa La Vagnola is located in Cetona in the province of Siena. The villa dates back to the eighteenth century and is open for visits during the summer months by appointment.
Villa La Vagnola was built in 1750 by the owner Salustio Terrosi. Salustio Terrosi was born in Cetona and got married in the mid-eighteenth century with Maria Antoinetta Vagnoli. The name of the villa therefore probably comes from the name of his wife. In the seventeenth century the property was a small village with a number of simple houses. In the eighteenth century the land was reclaimed and the new owners decided to erect a luxury villa. During the reclamation and leveling of the land, the Terrosi asked his architects and planners to dig underground caves. Inside the caves there are stalactites, stalagmites and travertine. Travertine almost certainly comes from quarries near Mount Cetona.
The park is on a hill about 15 hectares. Inside the park you can admire an amphitheater. The amphitheater can accommodate up to two hundred people to sit. The hedges are the scenes of the stage in stone. In addition to the amphitheater particularly important an Etruscan tomb of the seventh century BC. The tomb was transported in the park from its original place and here was rebuilt and adorned with archaeological finds dating back to Etruscan times.
A house for hunting and a Turkish Casina are other prominent elements in this important park of Siena. The Turkish Casina is masterfully painted. A tall obelisk serves as the point of intersection of the various parts of the garden, the woods and the botanical garden. The owner today belongs the famous Italian fashion designer Valentino, which allows visits from June to September.
