Villa La Suvera in Siena
Villa La Suvera is a beautiful villa located in Pievescola in the province of Siena. The villa was built by the Della Rovere in the early sixteenth century. The coat of arms of the villa is the coat of arms of the Della Rovere family with a light blue tree on a gold color. The branches of the tree form a cross called St. Andrew's cross.
Villa La Suvera was built in 1507 by Giuliano Della Rovere. Giuliano della Rovere was an important pope, Pope Julius II. On the property there was an old building and it was completely renovated and expanded. The building dates back to the begining of the 1100 and it was built by Ardengheschi, a Lombard family. The new villa is characterized by three lodges on three floors with a non-uniform structure that makes it unique. The opening of the lodges outward testimony to the new ideology of openness towards the surrounding landscape. This ideology since the sixteenth century marked the architecture of palaces and villas in Tuscany and Italy. In addition, the lodge allows you to enjoy the scenery outside while being protected from the walls of the house.
Villa La Suvera takes its name from the French 'souveraine' which means 'sovereign'. Julius II had a personality enlightened, elitist and open. He commissioned work to Bramante, Raphael and Michelangelo. The villa has an open porch to the outside admiring the valley. The lodges are covered by vaults. The portals and the fireplace in the lounge transmit the balance between a formal and stylistic taste. The park is very large. Outside there is an aviary and a chapel. These elements follow the eclectic style. There are also many sculptures and fountains.
In 1534, the della Rovere sold the villa to Nicola Sigismondo Chigi. After several passages, the property passed to the Ricci family and is now a hotel.
