Villa Catignano in Siena
Villa Catignano is located in the village of Catignano in Castelnuovo Berardenga in the province of Siena. The villa dates back to the 1500 and is now a venue for events and weddings and a villa that hosts tourists.
Villa Catignano was built in the sixteenth century but the current architectural layout was designed by the architect Claudio Sergardi that at the end of the seventeenth century was the owner of the estate. The property consists of the main villa and a farm, a wine cellar, stables and a chapel. Particularly interesting is also the park of the villa which is accessed through a large wrought iron gate and two travertine columns.
At the end of the seventeenth century, the architect from Siena Jacopo Franchini was called by the family Sergardi to build the chapel of the villa. The chapel, in fact, dates back to 1697. The dome of the chapel has an octagonal base and the entrance is marked by a porch. The stucco decorations are plentiful and paintings depicting the 'History of the True Cross'. The Sergardi family coat of arms is located outside a wing of the manor house. In addition, you can read the family motto in Latin 'Expertus fidelem'.
The park is characterized by an avenue of cypresses close to the lemon garden that leads to a semicircular lookout. The lookout is surrounded by a forest of oaks and cypresses. Numerous rainwater tanks adorn the garden. Two flights of stairs lead up from the villa to the Italian garden with hedges and statues of the Four Seasons, an orchard and a meadow with large clay pots, a niche with a bust and a cave, a typical element of the nineteenth century garden.
