Villa Le Volte in Siena
Villa Le Volte, also known as Villa Volte Alte, it is located in Sovicille in the province of Siena. Villa Le Volte was owned by the Chigi family. The coat of arms of the villa is the one of the Chigi family. The coat of arms of the Chigi family is red with six gold peaks and on the highest eight-pointed star with a gold color.
Villa Le Volte was built in 1505. The owner of the property was Sigismondo Chigi, who was looking for a home where he could relax. The architect was Baldassare Peruzzi. The Chigi family was one of the most powerful families in Siena and also very important in Rome. The great palace called La Farnesina in Rome was built by the Chigi family shortly after Villa Le Volte. The Farnesina palace, today home of the Italian Foreign Ministry, was also a project by the architect Baldassare Peruzzi. Villa Le Volte is a turning point in the architecture of villas because the villa opens to the outside with two large wings full of windows and balconies on the facade. The idea of the lodges had already been used on the facade of Palazzo Piccolomini in Pienza by another great Italian architect, Rossellino.
The exterior walls are painted, and even this was a rarity in the historic mansions of the sixteenth century. The interior of the villa is decorated with frescoes and paintings. The painted decoration was executed by artists friends of Peruzzi between 1520 and 1523. In particular, the artists decorated the vaulted ceilings of the various rooms and halls. The painted vaults give the name of the villa.
In 1605 the villa was restored. Unfortunately, the lodges of the first floor were closed. The restorers, however, opened a gallery on the opposite side and framed doors and windows.
