Villa Il Serraglio in Siena
Villa Il Serraglio is located in Monteliscai in the province of Siena. The property is renowned not only for the villa, but mainly due to the large park surrounding it.
Villa Il Serraglio is a typical country residence of a noble Sienese. In 1737 Giulio di Lelia del Taia bought this property and then began to work at the villa and the garden. In 1841 Carlo Grisaldi del Taia inherits the villa. After a short time, however, the family is forced to give up this and other properties for a financial meltdown. The various buildings were sold one at a time. The main building has three floors and the main entrance has three arches, stairs to reach the main entrance, a balcony and a large clock. Wrought iron decorations adorn the facade and a bell.
The largest structural changes occured in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The park was designed by Carlo Grisaldi del Taia and his wife Angiolina Brancadori . A long avenue of cypresses connect the villa to the park and part of the garden called ' Hermit ' . In the past, the cypress had many decorative statues in terracotta. The Hermit was a copy of a convent with a miniature wooden monk who, when the door opens, moves toward the visitor with a basket for alms. In the small convent there were also construction of furniture, a bed, a dog and a cat in terracotta and a loaf of bread with a glass of wine.
In the park the long driveway leads to the circular exedra . An obelisk in memory of Giulio Taia graces the circular exedra . The monastery is located on one side of the property while on the other side lies the park. In the park owners introduced various rare plants, creating a botanical garden with rare species. Among these , redwoods, magnolias and giant tuje.
